From contemporary art to the history of civilization, Europe has some of the best museums that cover almost every topic you could think of. If you are finding it hard to decide which ones to visit, OROGOLD has put together a small list of some of the best museums in Europe.
The Louvre, Paris
Not only is the Louvre one of the largest and most visited museum in the world, but it is also a historic monument in itself, as it used to be a royal palace before it was transformed into a world-class museum. Covering an area of over 60,000 square meters, the Louvre contains around 35,000 objects that date from prehistory all the way to the 21st Century. Although each of these objects is worth plenty of attention, there are three pieces that OROGOLD highly recommends you don’t miss; Mona Lisa, Venus de Milo and Winged Theory.
The British Museum, London
With around 8 million pieces, the British Museum’s permanent collection is one of the largest and most comprehensive in the world. A treasure trove for archaeologists, the museum is packed with objects from all over the world, documenting the journey that human culture has taken. Some objects, such as the Parthenon marbles, have been at the center of great controversy, with many calling for them to be returned to their country of origin. Other popular pieces, and ones that OROGOLD highly recommends you seek out in the museum, are the Rosetta Stone and the Egyptian mummies.
The Vatican Museums, Vatican City, Rome
Another of the greatest museums in the world, the Vatican Museums are located in Vatican City, and were founded in the 16th Century by Pope Julius II. In addition to the extraordinary collection of works that the Roman Catholic Church has built up over the centuries, you will also find the Sistine Chapel, one of the greatest art treasures of all time. Although the queues to enter the museum may seem intimidating, the experience of seeing the Sistine Chapel close-up makes the wait worth it!
Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam
The Rijksmuseum was first founded in The Hague in 1800, before being moved to Amsterdam 8 years later. It is one of the most visited museums in the Netherlands, and, being home to the works of some of the most-loved Dutch masters, this is no surprise. Whether you’re looking for art by Rembrandt, Vermeer or Hals, this is where you will find it. The building has recently undergone a ten year renovation, worth over USD$400 million, so now is the ideal time to visit.
From learning about human history at the British Museum in London, to taking in the wonders of the Sistine Chapel in Italy, these are some of Europe’s top museums. OROGOLD reminds you that most museums are closed one day of the week, usually on Mondays, so be sure to check the opening days and times before visiting. Different museums also have different rules regarding photography, so make sure you know what these are before snapping away with your camera!
