Great Places to Shop in New York

//Great Places to Shop in New York

With everything from bustling flea markets to extravagant designer flagship stores, New York is known for being one of the best shopping destinations in the world. Whether you prefer the glitz and glamour of Madison Avenue, or the vintage stores of Williamsburg, these are some of the best shopping areas that New York has to offer.

Williamsburg
While trekking to Brooklyn for a shopping trip may seem like an unnecessary journey, Williamsburg is worth the effort. Rather than the same chain stores that can be found everywhere else in the city, Williamsburg is filled with edgy boutiques featuring up-and-coming designers, as well as some of the finest vintage stores in the city, including Atlantis Attic and Beacon’s Closet. Of course, Williamsburg is also home to the indoor marketplace Artists and Fleas, as well as the seasonal outdoor Brooklyn Flea Market.

Madison Avenue

Madison Avenue
Located in the Upper East Side, world-famous Madison Avenue is lined with iconic designer stores, serving up the finest of New York’s shopping opportunities. Begin at Chanel, before heading over to Gucci and Cartier, after which you can stop off at Barneys before finding a spot for lunch. Then, head over to Valentino, Armani and Tory Burch, all of which are havens for designer goods.

Soho
While Soho was once dominated by artists, it is now one of the best shopping areas in the city, as it boasts a wonderfully diverse array of stores. In addition to the luxury brands, which include Prada, Burberry and Chanel, Soho is also home to several cult fashion brands, such as Phillip Lim, Alexander Wang and Acne, and a range of fast fashion stores, including Zara and Topshop. Soho is also the place to go for home design and furnishings, as there are a number of local and international favorites here.

Fifth Avenue
Fifth Avenue is iconic, and needs little introduction. Considered to be the heart of retail in Manhattan, Fifth Avenue is home to some of the most important department stores in the city, including Henri Bendel, Saks 5th Avenue and Bergdorf Goodman. In addition to the expertly curated collections that you will find in these world-class department stores, you will also be able to browse everything from fashion to accessories to beauty along Fifth Avenue, and will be able to stop off at many speciality stores along the way.

Woman happy shopping

Chinatown
There are gleaming designer stores located all over New York City, but if you are seeking out a more exotic and action-packed shopping experience, Chinatown is the place to go. The markets that you will find along Canal, Mott, Mulberry and Elizabeth Streets are always fun to browse, and while you will see a mind-boggling selection of goods on offer here, keep in mind that the quality of many of them is often questionable. However, with everything from street food vendors to traditional Chinese homeware and spices to speciality tea shops, Chinatown is definitely a feast for the senses.

New York City is a shopper’s paradise, offering up just about everything that you could imagine. Whether you are seeking avant-garde fashion or traditional speciality foods, give these areas a try the next time you are heading out into the city for some retail therapy.
